The Parkland Historical Society began a project in 2009 to present to the Community the history of Parkland using historical markers placed in Parkland's parks, along Parkland's walk ways and along its bicycle paths. The project, called Portals of Parkland's Past, has involved Historical Society members building, erecting and dedicating what will eventually be approximately twenty historical markers.

Members of the community can sponsor an individual portal with a $250 tax-deductible donation to the Parkland Historical Society (see "*" portals below). A plaque with the sponsor’s name and a brief message will be adhered to the portal (see 1, 5, 7 and 10 below).

Ten historical markers are installed. The 11th and 12th will be installed at Quigley Park and Camp Telogia around the end of 2012.


History of Holmberg Road (#1 below)

1. History of Holmberg Road located on the northeast corner of Holmberg and University (Sponsored by the City of Parkland)
2. “Fire Works” in the 1970s about the volunteer Fire Department located at the driveway entrance to the Public Services and Fire Station Facility by the Parkside Drive round-about (6500 Parkside Drive here Old City Hall used to be); (*)
3. City of Parkland Covered Bridge located on Holmberg Road just east of 61st Avenue along the north/south pathway in Covered Bridge Park, 6031 Holmberg Road (just west of US441/SR7); (*)
4. Holmberg Road located on the east side of the pathway at the Covered Bridge. (*)
5. The Ranches--The Heart of Parkland located at the Equestrian Center at Temple Park on Ranch Road (Sponsored by James Willard in Memory of Bobby Willard).
6. Doris Davis Forman Wilderness Preserve located at the Preserve on Parkside Drive just south of Riverglades Elementary School. (*)
7. The Sawgrass Expressway located on the west side of University Drive across from Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and just north of Aston Gardens (Sponsored by Andrews & Company “for all your accounting needs”).
8. Draining the Everglades located on Heron Bay Boulevard west of Coral Ridge Drive and just east of the entrance to Heron Bay. (*)
9. Liberty Park: The Park the People Built located at the entrance to Liberty Park (Sponsored by The Beck, Frost, Light and Rosenof Families and dedicated to the volunteers who made this dream come true).
10. Parkland Library is located at the entrance to the Parkland Library near City Hall (“Sponsored by Carolyn and Robert Marks and Diane and Jerry David”).
11. Quigley Park will be located at the entrance to Quigley Park at 7901 Parkside Drive and is named for the fourth mayor of Parkland, John H. Quigley.
12. Camp Telogia will be located at the entrance to Camp Telogia, the 13-acre Scout camp located at 6501 Holmberg Road.
